Cloth Seal, Norwich, Alnage, Crown

Cloth Seal, Norwich, Alnage, Crown, Image by StuE, Found by Nasher.
Found near Baldock, Hertfordshire, 13mm, 3.2g.

1:6 / 8.1, N O R W I C H + around // crown

A broken two part alnage seal showing a date at the centre, the 8 being flat at the top. Although this could be mistaken for the inner discs of a four part seal there is a definite rivet. This along with the connecting strip would mean that any further discs would be after the point of riveting and very vulnerable to being broken off once attached to a cloth.

See seal 1388, p.97, 2216 in Provenanced Leaden Cloth Seals by Geoffrey Egan, Sub-Department of Medieval Archaeology, University College, University of London submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1987, "[seals] 1388,2231 -// 16/81, NORWICH+ around // crown //- These [are] the only recorded four-disc seals for this city, which is exceptionally well-represented by the two-disc type".
