Cloth Seal, Charles II, Alnage, 1682

Cloth Seal, Alnage, Charles II, JSHME Ligature, Image & Found by Goggles.
Found in the North Lincolnshire area.

Scratched A (I with extra horizontal) // Crown :CR: beneath, inscription around ENGLAND.1682 // (SHME ligature) 1682 above, 1 1/2 below // rove disc with revet protruding

A complete four part Alnage seal from the reign of Charles II. Disc 2 has a Crown with :CR: beneath and ENGLAND.1682 curved around the inside of a continuous raised circular border. Disc 3 also has the remains of a continuous raised circular border in which the date 1682 is straight across the top above a ligature and the numerals 1 1/2 beneath, the amount of levy paid on the cloth. The ligature looks to be SHME. Disc 1 has what looks to be two letters scratched on to it, an A and an I with an extra horizontal across its middle.

Oxford seals have been found with the same ligature that Egan interprets as "[?EHMS in alphabetical order… presumably the initials of two alnage officers.]", Provenanced Leaden Cloth Seals by Geoffrey Egan, Sub-Department of Medieval Archaeology, University College, University of London. submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1987.
