Cloth Seal, Charles II, Alnage, 1682

Cloth Seal JME Ligature, Image & Found by James Crombie.
Found in Yorkshire, 15mm.

One section probably from a four part alnage seal showing a ligature thought to consist of the letters JHME with numerals 82 above and possibly a star below, all in a double circle, inner solid and outer corded.

The number is believed to be the date 1682 as the ligature has been found on other dated seals. Therefore attributed to the reign of Charles II.

Oxford seals have been found with the same ligature that Egan interprets as "[?EHMS in alphabetical order]", Provenanced Leaden Cloth Seals by Geoffrey Egan, Sub-Department of Medieval Archaeology, University College, University of London. submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1987.
