Cloth Seal, Searcher's, Proforma-type, Image by StuE, Found by Goretex.
Found in Yorkshire, 31 x 19mm, 7.9g.
Distinctive rectangular/spade-shaped with a disc seal. RCH / ED from SEARCHED remains on the rivet. Other side is blank but connecting-strip is unusually marked with two pellets and cross on blank side and line on the inner side with lines crossing it (possibly used as a guide for folding?)
See No.118, Fig.26 Geoff Egan, 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum' Occasional Paper 93.
"These are a distinct series of proforma seals, cast with standard specifications for different kinds of cloth and with a space next to these for an alnager's or searcher's stamp, to confirm that from examination the textile was indeed as the regulations required."
