Cloth Seal, German, Salzwedel Altstadt, 1569
Cloth Seal, German, Salzwedel Altstadt, 1569, Image & Found by Peter Eggers.
Found in Amsterdam in the 1980's, 19.4mm, 7.8g.
Early arms of Salzwedel, 69 to right // rose, inscription around
Salzwedel Altstadt (oldtown) had the traditional single key next to half eagle as opposed to Salzwedel Neustadt (newtown), which had a complete eagle displayed on one side and two keys on the other, see BSG.CS.01551.
By 1669 the arms had changed and so this seal must be dated 1569.
Another example is published in Cat No. 15 p.16, Inventory number P1400498a, Salzwedel Altstadt, Oostveen, Textiel_loden. Loden 1600 – 1670, "Coat of arms of Salzwedel (Altstadt) probably with a year (16)07? / Rose with border text (probably) IN DER OLDEN STADT SOLTWEDEL" The year could be read as 1567, which would fit in with this seal.
