Cloth Seal, Searcher, T-Clip Seal, W SMA
Cloth Seal, Searcher, T-Clip Seal, W SMA, Image & Found by Bill Dancy.
Found near the Rappahannock River, eastern Virginia, USA, 24mm.
N or Z scratched, V XX? on T-bar // .W. / SMA / PA(C?)
An English searcher's seal with unusual structure. A two-disc rivet seal with a T-bar joined to the rivet disc. Examples of this type have been found with Roman numerals on both sides of the T-bar (see below) and some, like this example, with the bar bent fully back against the rivet disc.
See Euro-Plombs, . C . / HEBLE / TWHA/ ITE, "Textile seal lead, belonging to the family of London clothiers, Hebletwhaite. The one concerned by our lead had a first name beginning with C. We find in 1587 Will of Henry Hebletwhaite clothier in London, as well as a Thomas and a Robert, I did not find a first name beginning with C. But it does not no doubt that the one of our lead in 1658 or 1656 was a member of this family."
