Cloth Seal, Clothier's Seal, Tiverton, George Osmond

Cloth Seal, Clothier's Seal, Tiverton, George Osmond, Image & Found by Peter Herschlein.
Found in northern Germany, 24mm.

22 / GO // privy mark with foot S F beneath, inscription around

A Tiverton clothier's serge cloth seal.

From Peter Maunder, "Frustrating that the lettering is missing.
It is in situations like this that Jane's catalogue comes into its own.
I reckon this is another example of seal No. 34 on plate 4.
It looks to me as if the "22" and "GO" are struck from the same dies - they are virtually identical.
On the rove disc, the foot symbol is very similar, and the remains of the lettering beneath I can make out the bottoms of the letters TIVE [RTON]
Seal No. 34 has the pelleted border round the foot symbol and has the word TIVERTON in the right place beneath the foot symbol.
Therefore, I think this is a George Osmond seal dating from 1732 to 1744." Mike Patrick agrees.

Confirmed by Jane Evans as Type 2.8.3, in use by George Osmond. See TIVERTON CLOTH, The Story of the Town’s Woollen Trade 1475–1815 by Peter Maunder p.401.

The fullest collection of Tiverton cloth seals (about thirty) is on permanent display in Tiverton Museum.
