Cloth Seal, Norwich, Tubular, LII:
Cloth Seal, Norwich, Tubular, (L)II:, Image & Found by Lisa Jones.
Found in Norfolk, 25 x 17mm.
LII: in rectangular rope border // no decipherable markings
Late sixteenth to seventeenth century tubular cloth seal with Roman numerals that very probably refer to the length of the cloth - 52 yards. This is a type of seal typically used by the Dutch immigrant weavers and despite having no markings on the reverse to indicate which of the several locations it could have originated from it is very similar to one recorded as originating from Norwich, No.95, Fig.23, Geoff Egan, Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum, Occasional Paper 93.
See BSG.CS.00997 for simlar seal found in Portugal.
