Cloth Seal, Clothier's Seal, Taunton, Serge

Clothier's Seal, Cloth Seal, Serge, Image & Found by Derfel.
Found on Thames foreshore, 33mm.

Rivet disc of two disc cloth seal showing RB ligature with pellet annulus around containing inscription - SARGES.TAVИT(AV?)И // (head of rivet) S in ring of pellets, inscription around - ...ONROBE...

Most probably the seal of a Taunton clothier. Interesting parallels with two seventeenth century seals shown in Geoff Egan, 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum' Occasional Paper 93. - No.97 Fig.23 for "Tanton Serges" believed to belong to the wealthy Taunton clothier, Robert Moggredge and No.98 Fig.23 with similar retrograde N and partial spelling of Taunton, "TAVИTOИ" See BM, Collection online, Cloth-mark, seal for serge; lead; seal of Robert Moggridge, Taunton clothier; (1): ligatured initials, inscribed around.

The inscription around the S suggest this clothier was another Robert whose surname ended in ON and, from the ligature, began with B.
