From Museum display label:- "Lead Customs Seal, c. 1820s-60s. These were used by Customs officials to seal bags of goods, indicating the contents had been examined. Cat: CuGI 52315"

A U.K. customs & excise seal.

From Dr. Wayne Johnson:- "We don’t have any more information other than where on the Cumberland St site it was found etc (ie amongst other refuse). It was clamped over some wire that was used to close something, so that it would be obvious that it had been opened if the wire was cut. The crown impression indicates it was HM Customs who authorised the sealing, so when it arrived here and was inspected then it would be clear nothing had been added or taken away from whatever it was sealing."

(NB. The CuGl stands for Cumberland/Gloucester. This is the site of the archaeological dig where items were found.)
