Cloth Seal, Charles, Essex, Alnage, TP, Image & Found by London Mudlark
Found on Thames foreshore
Three discs from a four disc alnage seal (rivet disc missing), inner discs show TP ligature with star above and ESEX upside down curved around base, all in a line and pellet circular border // undecipherable image with C and possibly R to sides
The alnager TP or PT is known also on seals from Hampshire, Kent and Norwich.
Many of these seals are known and some allow the probable dating to Charles I and suggest the unclear image might be lion statant on chapeau, see p.93 & 142, and seal No.134, Provenanced Leaden Cloth Seals by Geoffrey Egan, Sub-Department of Medieval Archaeology, University College, University of London. submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1987.
