Not a Cloth or Bag Seal, Papal Bulla of Pope Gregory X 1271-76

Papal Bulla of Pope Gregory X 1271-76, Image & Found by Firesmudge.

This is not a bag or cloth seal but the seal of a Pope attached to document dispatched by him. This particular one was found by Firesmudge in Scotland and could prove to be extremely important in unravelling the history of the particular area it was found in.

See Geoff Egan, Papal Bullae, p.87, Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue, Part 3, ed. Peter Saunders, 2001, "These lead seals were put on official papal documents sent out from Rome (or during the Schism, from Avignon) as a means of authentication. PP stands for pastor pastorum - 'shepherd of the shepherds'."
