Cloth Seal, Dutch, Naarden

Cloth Seal, Dutch, Naarden, Image & Found by Niels Arvesen.
Found near Vemb in Denmark, 27mm.

Double headed eagle displayed // thin Lombardic letter N possible inscription around

Identified by Philippe Lanez.

A two-disc cloth seal from the Dutch city of Naarden. The eagle is from the city's coat of arms. Naarden is a municipality and a town in the Gooi region in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. Naarden is an example of a star fort, complete with fortified walls and a moat. The moat and walls have been restored and are currently in excellent condition. Naarden was granted its city rights in 1300 (the only town in Het Gooi to have been done so) and later developed into a fortified garrison town with a textile industry.

See Anton Cruysheeren & OlafLangendorjf, Loden van de textielstad Naarden, 2014, for a description of the cloth seals from Naarden.

See BSG.CS.00448 and another example here which dates them to the 17th century.

Unusual examples with both double rove-discs and double connecting strips are known, see Euro-Plombs.
