Cloth Seal, French, Roubaix
Cloth Seal, French, Roubaix, Image & Found by Redgy Dewulf.
Found in maritime Flanders, 22mm.
CALM.. / 83@ // ROV / BAIX / 1741
A two disc, double rivet seal for cloth from Roubaix, "a city in northern France, located in the Lille metropolitan area on the Belgian border".
The @ symbol is first mentioned in a measurement gauge context in a document dated 1536 concerned with the size of amphorae. There are many more examples of Leiden seals* showing this @ sign above a length, all using the same letter type. In Leiden Museum they have seal matrices for these types of cloth seals.
