Cloth Seal, Elizabeth I, London

Cloth Seal, London, Elizabeth I*, Image & Found by Jonniepk.
"It's a Norfolk find and it's 25mm dia."

A rivet disc from a double disc cloth seal showing the crowned arms of England E R to sides, inscription around S' V[LII'PAO'VI]ALLE'LON'. The other side (rivet) shows a ridged cross quartered shield (from the arms of London) the inscription is mostly missing but from other examples would be:- [LON]DINI [PRO PANNIS LANICIS], unfortunately the year that normally ends this inscription is also missing.

A London alnage seal of Elizabeth I. *The ER could possibly stand for Edward VI extending the date back to 1553. The full inscription is known from other examples including No.61 Fig.19, Geoff Egan , 'Lead cloth seals and related items in the British Museum', and translates to:- seal of alnage of saleable cloths of London for woollen cloths at London.

Also recorded as UKDFD Ref. No. - 35473
