Not a Cloth or Bag Seal, Jerusalem Cross, Image & Found by Antonio.
Found in Calabria Region of south Italy, 19mm x 21mm.
Jarusalem Cross on one side and IGI on the reverse, the I's are smaller and not certain.
The connection between the two faces is much too thick to be a cloth seal rivet and it does not have the structure of a bulla-type seal. It appears more like the joint found in a pot mend but these are usually left blank on both faces. It may have been a decorative mount.
The Jerusalem cross, also known as the Crusaders' cross or the "Five-fold Cross", is a heraldic cross or Christian symbol consisting of a large cross potent surrounded by four smaller Greek crosses, one in each quadrant. From Wikipedia.
As can be seen the emblem has been used many times since the design originated with the coat of arms worn by Godfrey of Bouillon during the First Crusade and remained in use as the armorial of the Kingdom of Jerusalem throughout its duration (1099–1291). It is pure speculation but the letter G maybe connected to Godfrey of Bouillon who was known to have taken part in battles in Italy when Henry IV took Rome away from the pope. However the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem traces its roots to Duke Godfrey of Bouillon and have used the symbol as the major component of their arms since 1496 until the present day, the Pope being the Grand Master until 1949 and, obviously, based in Italy.
