Cloth Seal, Belgian, Liège

Cloth Seal, Belgian, Liège, Image & Found by Danny Ronda.
Found in Amsterdam, 21mm.

Crowned double headed eagle displayed* (overlaid scratched counting mark) // monument (Le Perron) L / 9 G / 1 to sides

*indistinct on this seal but clear on similar examples.

The arms of Liège are incomplete and partly missing on this seal. The 9 1 above the L G probably represents the year 1691. The counting mark scratched on the rivet disc over the double headed eagle represents 30 ells length of cloth. See BSG.CS.01028 for more information on the counting mark system.

From Jan van Oostveen for a similar seal, "At the beginning of the 17th century, alum was discovered in the limestone shafts north of Liège. Naturally, this led to an expansion of the mining industry, but it was also an impulse for the textile industry in this region. Alum is used as a mordant for, among other things, dyeing wool and silk. Painting therefore became an expertise that flourished in the Visé - Liège region in the course of the 17th century. The lead shown here shows 'Le Perron' with the letters LG on 1 side. 'Le Perron' is the place where laws and regulations were used in the past. The letters LG is an abbreviation for Libertas Gentis (freedom for the people). The reverse of this lead bears a crowned double-headed eagle. A reference that the textile was dyed and then inspected in the city of Liège."
