Cloth Seal, Germanic Merchant's Seal, Tudor England Arms
Cloth Seal, Germanic Merchant's Seal, Tudor England Arms, Image & Found by Wim de Bruijne.
Found near Abcoude, Netherlands, 54mm.
Crowned ornate shield bearing the arms of Tudor England supported by lion and greyhound, HONI.SOYT.QVI.MAL.Y.PENSE around // triple, five-petalled rose, HET*MOET*GEELEDEN*SYN* around
Thought to be a Germanic merchants seal for English cloth.
The Dutch inscription suggests its use was restricted to members of a group or syndicate.
Hopefully Jan van Oostveen will be able to tell us more in the future.
See BSG.CS.00373 for a similar example. BSG.CS.01266 has a better match for the Tudor arms but only one disc.
