Cloth Seal, Bale Seal?, Stuart Arms, Stag, Image & Found by Jason Sandy.
Found on Thames foreshore near Swan Lane between London Bridge and Cannon Street Bridge, 30mm.
Stag 160 over back (slight double stamping) // ornate shield bearing Stuart Arms (possible site of break near harp may indicate where attachment loop was joined)*
The arms are slightly bungled with the lower right quadrant showing the lions and flures-de-lise in the wrong order (spotted by Laura Radmore).
Although larger and with a stag replacing the York county side, this seal has enough similarities, including find spot for at least two others, with three suspected cloth bale seals:- BSG.CS.00637, BSG.CS.00301 and BSG.CS.01173.
*The last example above shows that there was a complete loop at the top. It suggests that this type was attached to the cloth by a tye through the loop. Possibly for ease of attachment to wrapped bales.
