Figure of Mercury, (BU)REAU DE ST MALO around // fleur-de-lis, (ADMINISTRATION DES DOUANES?) around

A customs seal for St Malo.

See BSG.BS.01820 for a similar seal for Nantes.

From Philippe Lanez, "A fleur-de-lis. The other side is the place office with BUREAU DE St. (SAINT) MALO., around the god of commerce, Hermes, holding a caduceus. Possible DOUANES ROYALES on the edge. Saint-Malo, Brittany, is the main port of the north Brittany coast, with a long historic past." See Old postcards, Customs offices, Saint-Vincent quay in 1841, "Customs set up its offices in the outer port of Saint-Malo, on the Saint-Vincent quay in 1841. Export goods, mainly food, are recorded there: butter, eggs, potatoes, fruit, poultry, etc. animals for slaughter, barley, cider, cod, but also wool, sailcloth, wood, iron, lead, copper, tobacco and, on import: charcoal, wine, wood. The building lost its function in the middle of the 20th century, replaced by new customs along the Duguay-Trouin basin, but it was not razed until 1981 when the parking lot was installed in front of the ramparts."
