Not a Cloth or Bag Seal, Pull Up To Open Tags
Pull Up To Open Tags, Image by StuE, Found by PWS
Found in the Colchester region.
Both sides have a continuous raised line circular border with the words PULL UP TO OPEN inside.
As there is a slot in the side in which something was attached it could be looked on as a form of seal.
From Paul Cannon, "I feel certain that the above two items can now be identified.
An advert for Johnnie Walker whisky from Sunday Express, 11 November 1928, p10 and also found in Aberdeen Press and Journal, 8 November 1928, p11, read as follows: “The new Johnnie Walker stopper’s a corker! Uncork your J.W. – no corkscrew to trouble you.” In the centre of the advert is a line drawing of a bottle of Red Label J.W. whisky. Attached at the upper end of the neck is a disc which on enlarging clearly reads PULL UP / TO OPEN. I can see from the image that if the instructions were followed, the string/wire attached to the disc would tear through the sleeve that encircles the top of the bottle and thus enables the cork to be removed manually. The sleeve and the string/wire are clearly visible in the drawing. The disc would appear to be associated with a new style of cork."
