Cloth Seal, Anne, Alnage, Harp
Cloth Seal, Anne, Alnage, Harp, 1702 onwards, Image & Held by the Warship Hazardous Prize (1706) Project Group.
Recovered from authorised excavation on the wreck of Warship Hazardous Prize, roughly amidships and in hold. She sank in Bracklesham Bay, West Sussex in 1706 at end of convoy escort duty from the colonies in the Virginias. Built 1698 by the French, captured by us, rebuilt and commisioned into British navy in 1703.*
Blank // head of Anne facing left // crowned harp 1 to left // crowned RWR monogram of William III
A complete four-disc alnage cloth seal from the reign of Queen Anne. The monogram of the earlier monarch is due to the alnager continuing to use stamps from earlier times, see p.34, Elton, Cloth Seals, Archaeopress 2017.
