French, Flour Bag Seal, Schotsmans Lyoen Seal

French, Flour Bag Schotsmans Lyoen Seal, Image by StuE, Found by Simon Col Club.
Found in Essex, 18mm, 7.1g.

Garbe (sheaf) with three flower heads around on horizontally striped background, quatrafoil SCHOTSMANS.L(YO)EN around // À, pentafoil sheaf pentafoil AIRE SU(UR LA LY)S around

From Paul Cannon, "I think this is probably a French flour seal. The left hand image reads: ‘SCHOTSMANS.LYOEN’. The other face ‘AIRE SUR LA LYS’ around ’À’. According to the following link Jean-Françoise Schotsmans married Nathalie Lyoen. Both their names appear on the seal. In the 1840s Schotsmans rebuilt and established an important flour mill at Moulin-le-Comte in Aire-sur-la-Lys in the Pas-de-Calais. For further details of the mill and its buildings see Patrimony and Historic Monuments of France."
