Cloth Seal, German, Ulm, Lion

Cloth Seal, German, Ulm, Lion, Image & Found by Darrin Simpson.
Found in East Sussex, ?mm.

Demi-lion with V above head // shield per fess, in chief 5x2 lattice with pellets in each void, in base blank

The rivet disc from a cloth seal stamped with the front half a lion with V above, probably for Ulm. The rove disc and connecting strip is missing but the rivet stub retains the partial stamp of shield bearing the arms of Ulm in Germany, where the black is represented by the lattice.

Fustians from Swabia (which includes Ulm and Augsburg) are reported as having four types of quality symbols stamped on their seals, an ox, a lion, a grape or a letter [Baur, K., 2015, p.154].
