Cloth Seal, Alnage, Crown over Double Rose, Image & Found by James Crombie.
Found in Yorkshire, 15mm.
One disc of a four disc alnage seal showing a crown over a double rose. The back of the seal shows the impression of the woven cloth it was attached to.
Probably from a crowned rose series of alnage county seals, see p.273, Provenanced Leaden Cloth Seals by Geoffrey Egan, Sub-Department of Medieval Archaeology, University College, University of London, submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1987.
Very similar crowned rose images can be found on No.140, Fig.27 and No.181, Fig.28 in Geoff Egan, 'Lead cloth seals and related items in the B.M. (B.M.occ.papers 93)'. These are alnage seals associated with William and Mary and Charles II.
