(Kyaes)? Seal, Image & Found by Steven Leckey.
Found near Pontefract, 27mm.
Central mark, text above and below // three lines of text with marks between
Although it is largely illegible the layout should allow identification if a clearer parallel seal is found.
From Paul Cannon, "A few thoughts on BSG.BS.01363:-
Left hand image might read ‘КУДЕ[ЛЬ]’ ie tow, a grade of flax/hemp from Archangel. Below the central damaged symbol is at least one, possibly two lines of text. There is room for two. I’m not sure but I wonder if the upper line reads ‘[.] COPT[Ъ]’. I agree it is very feint but this would be expected under the grade on an Archangel seal.
Right hand image – most of the inscription is ‘blurred’ and hard to decipher. I thought I could see ‘ОЗ’ in line 2 but I suppose it could also be ‘ОВ’. I’m not confident about seeing any of the normal abbreviations for Archangel. Having said that it is the right size for an Archangel seal and has the look of one, even though the layout isn’t typical. Just a thought."
