Dunston Seal

D..N...ON Seal, Image & Found by Bob Gunnis.
Found near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, 18.5 x 3.4mm, 4,72g.

D?N??ON // blank

The finder has suggested the village of Dunston, near Lincoln as a suitable fit for the partial inscription.

See PAS NLM-BAE685.

From Paul Cannon, "I wonder if the Dunston on the seal is more likely to be the area of Gateshead, on the southern bank of the River Tyne – “During the 19th and 20th centuries Dunston became a largely industrial area including colour and chemical works, patent nail works , firebrick works , engine works, Crowley’s ironworks and sawmills” Gateshead History. Dunston also had a major flour mill: “Once part of a complex of buildings owned by the Co-operative Wholesale Society, which included a soap works (HER ref. 1016), grain cleaning house and storage silos (HER ref. 1624) and a jetty. The flour mills were the first part of the complex to be built, in 1891. They are no longer standing” Dunston, CWS Flour Mills."
