Flour Bag Seal, Barlow & Sons

Barlow & Sons Seal, Image by StuE, Found by Saddlers.
Found in England, 21mm.

BARLOW AND SONS / tapered dash and central dot design / .BILSTON. // unicorn

Nice clear seal with a unicorn over a twisted rope (this is often a family livery format) and on the other side BARLOW & SONS curved above a tapered dash and central dot design with .BILSTON. curved below.
I am assuming it is the Bilston near Wolverhampton.

From records held in the National Archives at Kew:- Barlow & Sons formed in 26/9/1900 with the prime object, “To acquire upon such terms as shall be thought fit the business of a Miller heretofore carried on at Ettingshall in the County of Stafford and elsewhere by the late Harry Barlow under the style ‘Barlow & Sons’….” Due to the Companies Consolidation Act of 1908 the company called an extraordinary general meeting to confirm it would remain a private company under the terms of that act. The relevance of this is that the meeting was “held at Bilston Flour Mills, Wolverhampton, on the 23rd day of April, 1910,” further evidence that the company is the one associated with this seal. The company was wound up voluntarily in 1924 but the final winding-up meeting was not held until 25/10/1927.
