Museen Nord "Half-length portrait of the doctor Dr. Jacob Lange (23.8.1799-21.6.1873) with a black skirt and tie. He was a brother of the Uetersen mill owner Johann Peter Lange (1797-1854); until 1864 he shared a practice in Uetersen with his son-in-law Dr. Brodersen. Then he moved to Dresden, where his then wealthy brother Hinrich Wilhelm (1800-1875; founder of the mills at Neumühlen, near Kiel, and HW Lange & Co. at Altona and Reinbek) established an institution for the weak in the lungs (cf.written Message from Therese Völkel, great-granddaughter of Dr. Jacob Lange)."

For a seal from the other flour producing brother, H.W.Lange, see BSG.BS.01804.

From Lada Orlik Long Tannen Museum, "Roggenmühle JP Lange Söhne, Altona and the TIGER
Since the development opportunities for their mill company in Groß-Nordende near Uetersen were limited, the brothers Peter August and Heinrich Adolph Lange founded a branch in Altona in 1873. Conveniently located - on one side directly on the Elbe, on the other side on the Grosse Elbstrasse - the new mill benefited from the economic boom in Germany after the founding of the Reich, soon surpassed the parent company and became the main company headquarters in 1886. Massive setbacks - the mill burned down three times, in 1875, 1888 and 1892 and had to be rebuilt - did not detract from the successful development of the company.
Since the late 1870s, the mill has concentrated on grinding rye, which was primarily imported from southern Russia and the Balkans. The Lange brothers gave the name 'Tiger' to the rye flour they produced, their most successful branded product for decades to come, and thus characterized it as powerful and strong."
