A Tiverton clothier's seal, Evans Type 4.4.1.*. This seal is also recorded as No.58 Fig.6 p.404, Maunder, P., Tiverton Cloth: The Story of the Town's Woollen Trade 1475 - 1815.
Information from Mike Patrick who forwarded this seal image, "The seal could be dated to 1801-1802 as these were the years in which the partnership was formed and then dissolved. It was a "cause-celebre" as Hatfield was eventually hung for forgery".
*A helpful classification system for these seals, devised by Jane Evans, can be found as an appendix to Peter Maunder’s comprehensive history of the Tiverton cloth trade.
The fullest collection of Tiverton cloth seals (about thirty) is on permanent display in Tiverton Museum.
