These squares appear on many Schiedam cloth seals.

Michel Royer kindly supplied the following information, "They are three hourglasses in 2 and 1." - Euro-Plombs, Schiedam city coat of arms appears in Enkhuizen - It seems three hourglasses preceded the current arms of a lion rampant. They were connected with weights and measures in the herring fishing industry.
