Griffin & Dolphin Seal, Image & Found by SimontheSearcher.
Found in the Wiltshire region, 21mm diameter.
Seal with coat of arms consisting of a three ringed border (two raised continuous line circles with a circle of pellets between) inside this is a design of two ovals one containing XX in a pitted top section above a dolphin and the other containing griffin with the pitted top segment empty. There appears to be further markings below but these cannot be made out. The other side is blank.
Another seal has come to light with the same markings and the Post Office crown and markings on the opposite side.
Updated discription after seeing PAS record WILT-AFD0C4 identified by Mr David Algar:-
"This ..... seal ..... bears in two oval shields, on the left, a dolphin embowed below two saltires in chief and on the right, a griffin passant. This seal can be accurately dated to the period 1708-1715, when Sir Thomas Frankland had become the senior Postmaster General and his colleague was then Sir John Evelyn, bt. whose crest was the griffin passant."
