Cloth Seal, Clothier's Seal, Huddersfield, James Brooke & Son

Cloth Seal, Clothier's Seal, Huddersfield, James Brooke & Son, Image & Found by Andre Pereira.
Found in Portugal, 23mm.

Shield gold (indicated by pellets) 3 scallops on a fess, JAMES BROOKE (& S)ON around // broken loop?

From Mike Patrick, "in the Universal Exposition at Paris in 1878 (British Section, Class 33 - Woollen Yarn and Fabrics) James Brooke & Son, of Huddersfield had their black and blue diagonal and venetians and Bedford cords cited as being of recognized excellence."

From the above this is probably a Huddersfield clothiers seal but it has an unusual structure. If it was from a normal two-disc rivet cloth seal then there should be some evidence of the rivet stub on the reverse of the disc bearing the shield. It could be from a four-disc seal or it may be similar to types that have a loop to attach to the product such as metal ware products (see BSG.OS.00004) or a type that have suggested maybe used as cloth bale seals - see BSG.CS.00637
