Cloth Seal, Somerset, Alnage, PW

Cloth Seal, Somerset, PW, Image by StuE, Found by Doug Turner.
Found in England, 2.6g.

Missing // P/W SOMERSET around // * crown * / crown crown / 65 // missing

The inner discs of a four part alnage seal. Both appear to have a 'rope' circular border. Inside of one "SOMERSET" is curved upward around the edge with a P above a W inside this. The other side is less clear but looks to have three crowns in a triangular formation with a five-armed asterisk either side and the number 65 beneath.

The P over W is believed to be the mark of a particular post restoration alnager who applied his seals in several counties in the West of England from 1665 to at least 1676. 1665 on this seal makes it one of the earliest known for him.
