Cloth Seal, Norwich, Tubular, LII, Image & Found by London Mudlark.
Found on the Thames foreshore.
LII in sub-rectangular depression // no decipherable markings*
Late sixteenth to seventeenth century tubular cloth seal with Roman numerals that very probably refer to the length of the cloth - 52 yards. This is a type of seal typically used by the Dutch immigrant weavers and despite having no markings on the reverse to indicate which of the several locations it could have originated from it is similar to one recorded as originating from Norwich, No.95, Fig.23, Geoff Egan, Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum, Occasional Paper 93.
