Cloth Seal, Dutch, s´Hertogenbosch

Cloth Seal, Dutch, s´Hertogenbosch, Image & Found by Kadan.
Found in 2011 in the city Heusden (near 's-Hertogenbosch) in the province Noord Brabant in the Netherlands, 60mm.

Shield bearing a tree, ...BOSCH CV... around // missing

One disc from a very large two-disc cloth seal with the arms of the city of S-Hertogenbosch also known as Den Bosch.

From the finder:- "I am in possession of a large cloth seal (6cm = 2.36 inch) from de city of 's-Hertogenbosch "and is so interesting that I have reported it to de city archaeologist. The city is also in the possession of the same seal but is of a lesser quality. This lead probably comes from 17th century."

Some history:
"The city of 's-Hertogenbosch belonged to four major cities: Leuven, Brussels, Antwerp and 's-Hertogenbosch. Industries in Hertogenbosch included metal, cloth and leather. The Brabant cloth industry experienced a sudden revival from 1270. Brabantse cloths made of English wool found their way to various national and international markets. Mechelen and Leuven were the main cloth cities by a large distance followed by: Brussels, Diest, Antwerp, Zoutleeuw, Tienen, Herentals and Nivelles. The cloth industry developed further just before 1300. Also cloth guilds were set up in Diest, 's-Hertogenbosch, Vilvoorde, Herentals and Hoogstraten. The cloth weaving industry was prohibited in the countryside around the centres in order to prevent fraud. The boom persisted up to 1333/1334 when a combination of a boycott of the Duchy, military conflicts accompanied by an economic crisis in Europe, and new fashions and use of other materials drastically reduced exports. The cloth production collapsed during the rest of fourteenth and fifteenth century. In addition to the prosperous and large city of Den Bosch, there were smaller and medium-sized agglomerations in Northern Brabant. Most are market towns that the connection between big cities and rural areas insured, such as Breda and Oisterwijk. In some places there was talk of modest craft activity (production of cloth, linen and leather), but the places remained mainly an agricultural hinterland, with economical centers such as Helmond and Eindhoven."
