From Paul Cannon, "a Sicilian sumac seal. [One side] reads ‘WARRENTED PURE’ and above is probably ‘SHU[MAC]’. Upper image reads ‘STEAM MILLS’ and below is no doubt ‘PAL[ER]MO’. The initials ‘P.T.T’ on the raised area are those of the sumac producer. ‘Shumac’ is an older form of the word ‘sumac’ which was used in the tanning industry. ... The following is taken from the National Archives description of the records of E.G. Jepsom & Co., Chemical Manufacturers of Crown Point Road, Leeds. The dates covered by the records are 1886-1971. ‘… The chief lines of business were White’s Agency, the British Alizarine Co’s agency for their Alizarine Red Paste and powder, Brunner Mond’s Alkali, Castner-Kellner’s Bleaching Powder, Pritchard’s Oxalic Acid. It imported P.T. & T. and Orets brands of Shumac from Palermo …’. (Highlighted by me). See The National Archives. I have seen the firm described as a ‘Dyewood and Chemical Merchant’. From looking at a lot of newspaper references I can now see that the words Shumac and Sumac were basically interchangeable and were used together right up to time of WWI or thereabouts."
