Cloth Seal, Clothier's Seal, Exeter, Daniel Ivey

Cloth Seal, Clothier's Seal, Exeter, Daniel Ivey, Image & Found by Mark Ouwerkerk.
Found in the Netherlands, 20mm.

22* // heraldic figure / DI

*although markings beside the 22 could suggest 1/2 the consensus is that it is it is an illusion caused by damage. 1/2s are known on other Exeter seals but none with 22. It is commonly held that these figures refer to the length on cloth seals but we know it was associated with quality on Tiverton seals and we cannot be certain what they represent on Exeter cloth seals.

Peter Maunder, Jane Evans and Mike Patrick are of the opinion that this seal most likely belongs to Daniel Ivey, who was an Exeter-based merchant active in the 1690s.
