Danish, Customs Seal, Copenhagen

Copenhagen Customs Seal, Image & Found by Coreservers
Found in Midlothian, Scotland, 19mm.

Crown // KJØBENHAVN / TOLD / KAMMER*

From the finder, "Danish I think Crown on one side and on the other Kobenhaven (sic) Told? Kavmer? Found in Midlothian. quite big at 3/4 inch"

From Paul Cannon*, "I think the inscriptions read: KIØBENHAVEN (sic) or KJØBENHAVEN (sic) (older forms of the Danish word for Copenhagen) and TOLD/KAMMER which is Danish for 'customs office'."

From Steen Agersø, "To the spelling of København as "Kjøbenhavn". The older spelling with a "j" was officially changed in 1889 in words beginning with "kj" and "gj" such af kjærlighed (love) and gjennem (through), but was still used som years further on, like in company names and towns / cities. The spelling of København with "j" or without was optional til 1938. From then on only without the "j". Already in 1906 the spelling of København was officially changed to København by the city government. This makes a dating before 1906 the most likely dating."
