Cloth Seal, London Dyers Company, RWCH, Image & Found by John GM.
Found on Thames foreshore.
London Dyers' Company seal. RW / CH in quarters of foliated cross. The other side shows a date of 1616 around which is an inscription and motif - possibly* LIGHTCOLER above madder bags.
See No.272 Fig.36 and No.269*, Fig.35, Geoff Egan, 'Lead cloth seals and related items in the B.M. (B.M.occ.papers 93)'.
From Mark Sowden, "I contacted the Company of Dyers Hall to tell them about this cloth seal [another example found by Mark] and ask if they had any idea who RW and CH were. The archivist suggested two names; Richard Woare and Cuthbert Hackett, both dyers. Cuthbert married Judeth Woare, Richard Woare’s daughter. In 1616 Cuthbert Hackett is elected an Alderman. Ten years later he is elected Mayor of London. By this time he had left the Guild of Dyers and had become Master of the Drapers Company. ... The evidence is starting to build that the CH on the cloth seal is the same man, ten years before he was Lord Mayor of London."
