I.E. Saunders Bag Seal, Image by StuE, Found by Sue Clark
Found in Colchester Region, 26mm.
Bag Seal of I.E.Saunders with name across top curved around the inner perimeter of a continuous raised circular boarder, underneath in the centre is the image of a kohlrabi with KOHL on one side of it and RABI on the other but this is obscured, beneath this is CLAYHITHE CAMBRIDGE. Both sides bear the same markings.
Kelly's Directory of Cambridgeshire, 1883 lists under Horningsea (Clay Hithe) Saunders Brothers & Co as coprolite merchants. Also listed there on page 81, "Saunders Isaac Ebenezer, farmer. Clay Hithe". The use of I.E. Saunders rather than the brothers company name would suggest that this seal was for farm produce, kohlrabi, rather than the coprolite fertiliser.
