Russian Bale Seal, Baltic States, Flax, NP, 1761
Russian Bale Seal, Baltic States, Flax, NP, 1761, Image & Found by Baza.
Found in the Staffordshire.
Unusual Russian flax bale seal in that it appears to have less lines of text than the normal four. The figure after the N9 on the dated side is the Cyrillic П standing for P in our Roman alphabet and is probably followed by a Roman S. This is a common combination on bale seals from Russia and the decorative florets around the N 43 are also common to them. The size and date is consistent with Russian bale seals.
One of a sub group of bale seals all with N 43 on one side surrounded by four florets and dated 1761 on the other side. Above this the inscription seems to vary.
Inscription deciphered and completed by Ged Dodd of The PeaceHavens Project, IDS 96 using his extensive database:-
