Cloth Seal, German, Trier, St Peter, Image & Found by Folkert.
Found in Germany.
Robed figure holding key in right hand and book in left // arms in ornate border?
Early lead cloth seal thought to be from the fourteenth century. The city arms of Turnhout, now in Belgium, shows St Peter holding two keys, one in each hand. The arms of Trier show St Peter holding a key in his right hand and a book (gospel) in the left. The partial arms could be a cross which was Triers original arms.
Examples of Trier seals with the book held to the body in the left hand have been published and the book shows the five pellets as on this seal [Von Hans-Joachim Kann, Trierer Tuchplomben des 14.-17. Jahrhunderts, Kurtrierisches Jahrbuch, 1985].
