French, Burgundy Seal, Image & Found by Mudwiggle.
Found in the North Auckland district of New Zealand, 13mm.
From the finder:-
"A five pointed star on reverse, text on front reads
Bouchage de Mestre
E Te
SGTO(?)
Bordeaux"
Also from the finder, "The really interesting one is what I can best deduce is a seal off a late 19th century wine bottle (?) found on site of a hotel in operation 1850 - 1911. ...I have included a graphic of this as well.
I would appreciate it if anyone is able to ID, or at least do a better job than Google Translate :) 'Burgundy Summer Corking'"
From Philippe Lanez, "B.TE short form for Breveté, which gives Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement. (No State guarenties). The other side seems to read BOUCHON DE ????????????????? ... From 1887 to 1896, I found mentions of initial patent filing on December 18, 1886, and filing of amendment and addition to this patent, for a certain DE MESTRE (first name not indicated), whose addresses were in 1887, 16 bis rue Lecocq in Bordeaux; in 1888, 48 rue Vergniaud in the same city.
The patents concern a new hermetic stopper of Champagne wines and other sparkling wines and its improvements. The text of the original filing has not yet been found.
