Cloth Seal, George I, Alnage, Image & Presented by Martijn Schaftenaar.
Bought with some other seals in Holland where it is believed to have been found, ?mm.
Head facing left, GEORGE REX around, TENGILC*FINE* on widened section of connecting strip // lion passant on crown, 1 ½ to sides, N3:1292YARDS 47¾ on widened section of connecting strip
This is one of the last alnage seals as the system ended ten years after George I came to the throne. The 1½ d subsidy fee to the sides of the royal cipher marks it as an alnage seal. Traditionally the two numbers frequently found on alnage seals (often simply scratched on) stood for the length in yards and the weight in pounds. This seals throws light on the very large numbers found on later alnage seals. One number still clearly demarks the length in yards but the other is preceded by N, possibly simply for Number but describing what is not known. Similarly the term Tengilc1 Fine has not been has not been deciphered.
From Paul Cannon, "Here is another example of this unusually long alnage seal from Ukraine see p.24 fig.13 in Maxim Mordovin's E-Journal.
