French, Champagne Seal, EHRMANN FRÈRES
French, Champagne Seal, EHRMANN FRÈRES, Image & Found by Desmond Collins.
Found in Oxfordshire, 18mm, 5.8g.
Shooting star, EHRMANN FRÈRES curving down EPERNAY curving up around // grapes or face radiating* in border of pellets
*Suggests Sun in his Glory but could be the Roman God of commerce, Mercury (see Philippe's entry below).
"Ehrmann Freres, 28 Basing hall street E C" is recorded under "WINE GROWER" at post office london - Special Collections Online.
It is suggested that the shooting star denotes sulphur, which was used to prevent mould forming on the grapes, see BSG.BS.00628 that also shows an earlier or later version of this seal where Ehrmann is in partnership with his daughters and working in TOURS sur MARNE rather than EPERNAY.
A half bottle of EHRMANN FRÈRES champagne was auctioned as lot 163 The Saleroom (click on bottle for better image), and an 1878 vintage here - Whisky Auctions.
