MOULIN(S?) / DE / CAUF(FRY) // MAREU(IL)
From Philippe Lanez, "French flour bag seal. One side reads MOULIN(S?) DE CAUF(FRY). If I'm correct for 'F', the sole place in France beginning CAUF is Cauffry, in Oise department, Hauts de France Region (former Picardy). The other side reads MAREU(IL) supposed. This place has possessed several wind mills and two water mills.
An abstract of their history gives 'At the beginning of the last century, two water mills on the right bank of the Brèche were among the most productive in the department. The first, located about 200 metres from the Cauffry bridge (on the Liancourt road) was built around 1635 when the Brèche bed was being dug. It was a very beautiful building with a pretty fort façade built in monumental style and decorated with sculptures. This place was one of the walking goals of the guests of Liancourt Castle. In 1895, compressed and varnished cardboard objects were made there. Since 1910 an important industrial laundry is established there. The second mill, located about 400 meters from the first, had been established with "two turns" shortly before the revolution by the Duke of Liancourt who later modernized it. In 1893 a rope manufacturer, coming from the mill of Sailleville, settled there. It then became a factory of laces, braids and ropes.'
No further info about a MAREU(IL) so, miller in Cauffry, at present."
