BSG.BS.02201 — Italian, Palermo, Sicilian Sumac, Giuseppe Dalia & Sons
Palermo, Eagle Sumac Seal
Eagle displayed facing left, GIUSEP[PE] DALIA [& FI.] PA[LE]RM[O] around // flowering plant, [……….] PURE [S]HUMA[C] around
From Paul Cannon, "I am sure that it is a ‘sumac’ seal from the island of Sicily. Parts of the sumac plant used to be used as a leather colouring/tanning agent. The left hand image reads GIUSEP[PE] DALIA [& FI.] PA[LE]RM[O] around an eagle left. Giuseppe Dalia and son(s) were sumac dealers at 83 Via Dalia in Palermo. The right hand image appears to contain three words which may read [……….] PURE [S]HUMA[C]. The first word is uncertain. This is probably an example of the same type of seal [as the one found by Ben Faulkingham in Acton Massachusetts USA in 2023]."
