WOLLE / DEEKEN / GEMAAKT / BINNEN / LEYDEN / 1775 // missing but rivet stub shows remains of well known design - shield bearing crossed keys with lion rampant supporter, LEYDEN IN HOLERNDT around top
"20120730(1600) Martijn Schaftenaar_006: ‘WOLLEN DEEKEN GEMAECKT BINNEN LEYDEN 1775’, meaning woolen cloth made in Leiden, the backside of the seal shows a lion with the weapon of Leiden. It’s quite unique that this type was dated. Leiden used cloth seals until 1785/6, I thought."
If this date is correct then it moves these seals to the 18th rather than the 17th century where they were commonly thought to have been in use.
