BSG.CS.00968 — Cloth Seal, Norwich, Castle, C N

Cloth Seal, Norwich, Castle, Image & Found by John Brassey.

Found in Suffolk, 27mm.

Three-towered castle, lion passant gardant below, C N(retrograde) to sides, (CIVITATIS) N(ORWICI) around // missing (double rivet)

A two disc cloth seal for Norwich. The C N either side of Norwich castle also stands for its name in Latin Civitatis Norwici. The missing disc normally has a crowned portcullis again with CIVITATIS NORWICI around, which suggests they are alnage seals.

See Egan 1994, No. 70, which suggests they date from late 16th to early 17th century.

For an even larger (45mm, 43g.) Norwich, double rivet seal see Engels Textiellood (Datering 16e á 17e eeuw), Bodemvondstenwereld.
